Ambassador to Japan Rahm Emanuel, accompanied by U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken (not pictured), speaks at the U.S. The ambassador, Rahm Emanuel, has always spoken in "a colorful manner," said Matthew Miller, restraining a smile, although he declined to say whether Emanuel's comments had been cleared by the State Department. "I would guess that the Chinese government views Ambassador Emanuel's remarks as authoritative and deliberate signaling. I doubt that's the case," said Bonnie Glaser, a China expert at the German Marshall Fund of the United States. All of that suggests that the administration is unlikely to rein in its Japan ambassador.

Real estate problems persist with once-healthy developer Country Garden now on the brink of default. Real estate dragChina's massive real estate sector, where the majority of household wealth is parked, has reemerged as an area of concern that it could drag down the broader economy. Developer Country Garden announced over the weekend it was suspending trading in at least 10 of its mainland-China traded yuan bonds. The more the government tries to help the real estate industry, the longer it takes for the industry to find a reasonable bottom. State-owned developers have also fared better in terms of recent sales than non-state-owned developers, data show.

The last two times U.S. corn exports were lower than the 2022-23 expectations were 2019-20 (36.1 million tonnes or 1.78 billion bushels) and 2012-13 (16.5 million tonnes or 730 million bushels). CHINA BOWING OUTOn Thursday, USDA confirmed the week's second cancellation of U.S. corn sales to China, bringing the total to 560,000 tonnes (22 million bushels). As of April 20, China had 8.6 million tonnes of U.S. corn on the books for 2022-23 delivery, and 3.7 million still awaited shipment. Outstanding corn sales to China are comprised mostly of new purchases since March, implying those are among the ones now being cancelled. China only began accepting Brazilian corn shipments at the end of last year, though Japan frequently imports several million tonnes.
After Russia invaded Ukraine, the West formed what looked like an overwhelming global coalition: 141 countries supported a United Nations measure demanding that Russia unconditionally withdraw. But like many other African countries, South Africa appears careful to balance its growing ties with Russia against maintaining a relationship with the West. Others that provided Ukraine with military support have declined to impose economic sanctions on Russia.
China remains integral in the success or failure of U.S. corn, soy and other agricultural exports, and corn is currently carrying the biggest burden of proof. Although recent U.S. soy sales to China have weakened, the top buyer has been propping up the numbers by comparison. CORN AND OTHER GRAINAt just 14.1 million tonnes, U.S. corn sales as of Oct. 20 are dismal compared with recent years and expectations. Chinese purchases of 3.6 million tonnes are down from 11.9 million and 10.6 million tonnes by the same date in 2021 and 2020, respectively. Export sales as of Oct. 20 totaled 11.8 million tonnes, the lowest in more than 20 years.
